What does numerically controlled mean?

How is a CNC lathe constructed?
This section could be briefly described as follows: A CNC lathe is a
conventional lathe with controllable drives and usually a complete housing. In
contrast to a workshop or universal lathe, the CNC machine offers a higher
safety standard. All dangerous parts are shielded during production. This also
means that no emulsion and no chips can escape.
Otherwise, a CNC lathe consists of a frame, guides, slide, turret (tool
holder), spindle, tailstock, housing with doors, drives, control, control panel
and switch cabinet.
Options such as counter spindle, lubrication systems, coolant systems, chip
conveyors and parts catchers are added depending on the equipment.
The doors and flaps of a CNC machine are controlled. When the doors and
flaps are open, only a set-up mode is possible. If all access openings of a CNC
machine are closed, the program takes control of the machine. This includes
functions such as material supply for machines with bar loaders, use and speed
of the spindles and tools, coolant and lubricant supply, chip removal, parts
ejection, etc.
Tools for CNC lathes
Compared to conventional lathes, there are hardly any functional
differences in the tools for CNC machines (or CNC turning centers). Tools with
and without indexable inserts, drills, thread cutters, etc. are used for all
common work steps. One difference is the possibility of using driven tools on
CNC lathes, with which, for example, milling work can be carried out.
CNC machines can of course also be linked to tool magazines. In any case,
the tools must be equipped with tool holders that are suitable for the machine.
The CNC steering controls tool changes independently.
How can further automation look like?
The transition from CNC lathes to CNC turning centers is gradual. A CNC
lathe with a tool magazine could also be named turning center.
The possible degree of automation does not end there. Several machines can
of course also be linked. Handling systems then take over the transport
(removal and supply) from machine to machine.
The operator then only takes on control tasks and tasks such as setting up.
