Compressors
- An alternative name for compaction
This treatise does not refer to the compactors that
we know from the construction industry for compressing bulk material. The axial
compressors in jet engines and turbofan engines known from aircraft
construction are also not addressed here. The same applies to the high and low
pressure turbines in power plant constructions. These two types of axial
compressors are also a topic in themselves.
Compressors generally refer to the type of compactors
which raise gaseous media from a low pressure to a higher pressure level. This
report primarily refers to compressors for air.
Compressor
basics
The compaction of the gas air is also called
compressing. The term compressor is derived from this word. Compression
processes mean that a gas is compressed from a large volume with a low pressure
to a small volume and higher pressure. An overpressure is created. The
indication of the value for the overpressure relates to the atmospheric
pressure.
During the compression process, the temperature of
the gas also increases.
The
compressor, its types and designs
Compressors come in different types and designs.
Characteristic values for compressors are the possible amount per unit of time
(volume flow) and the maximum possible overpressure of the compressed gas.
Stationary compressors are mostly driven by
electric motors. Mobile compressors, as we know them from the construction
industry, for example, are driven by internal combustion engines. These
compressors are usually designed directly as trailers for trailer operation in
road traffic.
Compressors exist in addition to many other special
forms as piston compressors, rotary lobe compressors, lamellar compressors,
swash plate compressors and screw compressors.
Turbochargers, scroll machines and Roots blowers
are primarily known from vehicle construction.
The compressors for industrial use deliver a
pressure of 6 bar, in special cases up to 15 bar can also be achieved.
In order to compensate for pressure fluctuations in
a compressed air network, the pressure generated by the compressor is not
absorbed directly by the machine. The compressor delivers the compressed air to
a pressure vessel. A control circuit switches the compressor on when the
pressure falls below the minimum pressure in the network. Then the compressor
fills the compressed air tank again. A cooler and a water separator may be
installed between the compressor and the compressed air tank.
In addition to setting and regulating the pressure,
the so-called maintenance unit can also contain an oiler. The lightly oiled
compressed air is necessary for the smooth (or rather low-friction) operation
of air cylinders and air motors.
Where can
compressors be used?
Compressors are used where compressed air is
required. In industry and in special machine construction there are only a few
applications that work without pneumatics. Pneumatic cylinders and pneumatic
motors are a good example of this. Furthermore, air streams, for example, can
move parts or clean them in processes. Heavy parts can be moved playfully by
hand on air jet tables.
In the construction industry, the construction
compressor for operating pneumatic hammers is indispensable.
