Collet chucks - indispensable in metalworking
Collets chucks (also called collets) are used in conventional and CNC
lathes for workpiece clamping. They are installed directly in the spindle or
the collet holder. Collets are non-positive connected. A collet consists of a
sleeve that is similar to a cone and has an opening (hole) inside that can be
hexagonal, round or square.
In machine tools, collets are used in the machine spindle. It is then
fastened to the machine spindle with a union nut. The collet insert is pressed
into the inner cone of the collet holder with the clamping cone by means of the
union nut. The clamping drive actuates the collet chuck via a pressure tube,
the collet chuck opens in the direction of the work area, and the workpiece or
round material is clamped in the direction of the spindle drive.
Another version of the collet is the one with a feed chuck and a pressure
tube for the feed chuck. This means that after a finished workpiece has been
cut off, the rod can be pushed a predefined amount into the working area of the
machine tool and then clamped again.
A collet is ultimately a chuck without jaws that can be moved to different
diameters. A collet is a clamping device that is fixed to a specific shape and
dimension. The processing of different diameters also requires the use of
different collets. The clamping range of a collet is usually 0.3 mm, depending
on the design, a maximum of 0.5 mm is possible.

• Clamping of individual parts with a prefabricated
diameter
• Clamping round or pipe material as a rod
• Clamping round or pipe material as a bar with
automatic feed
• Special areas of application, e.g. clamping sets
of knives in slitting shears
• Clamping of drills and milling cutters
Collets are particularly suitable for clamping thin-walled pipes. The
clamping force is evenly distributed over the entire circumference. In contrast
to this with normal chucks, the clamping forces are introduced selectively,
e.g. at 3 or 4 points depending on the design of the chuck.
